Facebook Buys Virtual Reality Company for $2 Billion

What… is going on here exactly.

In its continuing quest for cyberspace domination, Facebook today announced its purchase of Oculus Rift, a virtual reality company that created one of the world’s most advanced VR systems and crowdfunded it on Kickstarter.

The Oculus Rift is currently only available to developers—who have managed to create a few immersive games that’ve yet to be released to the wider public—and Zuckerberg said he plans to accelerate the company’s game program while developing it as a “new communication platform.” What could this mean? The future is limitless and not a little crazy. Facebook chat could one day include a virtual reality component, and oh, the long-distance relationships that will save.

Anyway, Facebook paid a staggering $2 billion for the company, including $400 million in cash and 23.1 million shares of stock. Facebook is the Matrix.

Big rig wreck causes corndog spill

SHREVEPORT Louisiana - A big rig wreck that spilled corndogs across the highway shut down I-220 in Shreveport for hours Tuesday morning.

The wreck happened around 3:40 a.m. on I-220 West, near the exit onto I-20. The highway was shut down until around 12:30 p.m. while crews cleaned up the mess.

State Police said the truck's driver was heading west on I-220 when the semi flipped and hit a guard rail. The truck's load of corndogs spilled all over the roadway.

No one was hurt in the wreck, and authorities said the driver would not be cited...even though he was probably driving the semi truck recklessly and hot dogging.

Naked Florida man scares 6-year-old girl after having sex in Walgreens bathroom

March 25 (UPI) --

A Florida man was arrested over the weekend

when he scared a 6-year-old girl after emerging from

a stall in a Walgreens bathroom wearing nothing but

his birthday suit.

According to Winter Haven Police,

Christopher Mahurin and Jenna Lynn Frey

were having sex in the women’s restroom at the drug store

when a 6-year-old girl walked in to the use the facilities.

While she was in the bathroom, Mahurin burst out of the stall

completely naked and frightened her.

When she began screaming, he pushed her toward the door, WFLA reported.

The girl’s father was outside of the bathroom and went

in to grab her. Mahurin and Frey were in the parking lot when

police arrived on the scene. Frey initially told the police that

she was just using the bathroom, but eventually told officers

“they had intercourse in the stall.”

The 24-year-old man was booked on charges of

lewd/lascivious exhibition, indecent exposure in public,

battery and knowingly driving with suspended or revoked license.

Naked Alabama man tells police he's making tree 'his home' after climbing 40 feet up

March 25 (UPI) -- When police and fire crews arrived at an Alabama home to rescue a wild creature from a tree, it didn’t turn out to be a cat.

During an incident that police called “drug-related,” 40-year-old Michael Howard Long of Arab, Ala., climbed a tree at his home early Saturday morning while nude.

Long was about 40 feet up in the tree when police officers and firefighters arrived on the scene. Responders were surprised with his reason.

"Basically, all he would tell the officers was he was cleaning the tree up and was going to make it his home," assistant police chief Shane Washburn told WAFF.

After more than an hour of negotiating, Long finally agreed to come down and safely rode to the ground in a bucket truck.

Long was charged with public lewdness and disorderly conduct and taken to Arab City Jail. He pleaded guilty to the public lewdness charge in municipal court on Monday and the disorderly conduct charge was dismissed.

Alaska petition seeking secession back to Russia gets 10,000 signatures in three days

March 24 (UPI) -- A petition seeking the secession of Alaska back to Russia received more than 10,000 signatures in three days and is well on its way to getting enough signers to require an official response from the White House.

The "Alaska Back to Russia" petition was created by an unnamed Anchorage resident (S.V.) last week and it has already gotten more than 18,000 signatures. The petition needs 100,000 signers by April 20 to warrant a response from the Obama administration.

According to the petition:

“Groups Siberian russians crossed the Isthmus (now the Bering Strait) 16-10 thousand years ago. Russian began to settle on the Arctic coast, Aleuts inhabited the Aleutian Archipelago. First visited Alaska August 21, 1732, members of the team boat St. Gabriel »under the surveyor Gvozdev and assistant navigator I. Fedorov during the expedition Shestakov and DI Pavlutski 1729-1735 years…Vote for secession of Alaska from the United States and joining Russia.”

A similar petition seeking the secession of Texas garnered the following response from the White House after collecting more than 100,000 signatures.

"Our founding fathers established the Constitution of the United States 'in order to form a more perfect union' through the hard and frustrating but necessary work of self-government. They enshrined in that document the right to change our national government through the power of the ballot -- a right that generations of Americans have fought to secure for all. But they did not provide a right to walk away from it."

The United States bought Alaska from Russia in 1867 for $7.2 million.

Military-style explosive set off on Florida man’s car over unreturned cellphone SIM card

March 25 (UPI) -- A Florida man was so upset that his cellphone was returned without the SIM card that he allegedly got a military-style explosive and set it off on another man’s car in Orange City.

Aaron Nesbitt, 29, allegedly went to the parking lot of the establishment where he used to work, Mickey Finns Restaurant, on Sunday and exploded the M-21 on the hood of Armanny Echevarria’s car.

“It’s a flash bang, like a large firecracker, just a little larger than the carton of a toilet paper’s roll,” Orange city police spokesman Lt. Jason Sampsell told the Daytona Beach News-Journal. “It produces a flash, noise and concussion.”

According to Sampsell, Nesbitt had previous military training with the device.

The explosion did damage to the hood of the car and broke the windshield. Other businesses in the area were evacuated while police attempted to figure out what happened.

Nesbitt was charged with criminal mischief of $1,000 or more, possession of explosives without a license, and using a destructive device that could cause bodily harm and property damage.

He is being held at Volusia County Branch Jail.
