BoOzE NEWS

UPDATE via Time Newsfeed FROM LAST WEEK'S STORY ABOUT ELECTROLYTES IN BEER:

“The new creation provides a third more hydration than a normal beer, and this increased fluid retention should also help prevent hangovers the following day. The scientists did have to reduce some of the beer’s alcohol content to about 2.3% (versus 4.8% alcohol) for best results, but they report the additional ingredients do not affect its taste.”

So we have come across additional information that shows that the scientist had to actually lower the alcohol content to 2.3% to get their desired effects. We’d say that is cheating and missing the point. A beer with 2.3% alcohol is not a beer in our book. Try again scientists.

Apple to accept trade ins for credit toward a new phone:

Ric

CNN) -- For the first time Apple stores will soon let iPhone owners trade in their old phones for credit toward a new one, according to multiple reports.

According to Apple-centric blog MacRumors, several sources say Apple store employees are currently being trained on the new program, which could go into effect around Apple's September 10 event, when new iPhones are expected to be introduced. That would let iPhone owners exchange their older handsets for an iPhone 5S, or whatever the new phone is called.

In June, Bloomberg quoted unnamed sources saying that Apple was working with recycling company Brightstar and that trade-ins could be refurbished by Apple and resold in emerging markets throughout the world.

During Apple's most recent earnings call, CEO Tim Cook said he was "not opposed" to in-store trade-ins.

"I see channels doing it, and I like the environmental aspect of it, and so that part of it really is encouraging to me," he said. The "channels" he referred to are third-party vendors of Apple products, such as Best Buy, AT&T and Verizon.

The blog 9to5Mac says some Apple stores, including several in Dallas, Texas, already are running a limited pilot program.

According to the reports, people who bring in an older phone, like an iPhone 4 or iPhone 4S would get a gift card that could be applied to an iPhone 5. Presumably, the 5 would be added to the list of phones that can be traded in for a discount on the next iPhone.

It's not clear whether earlier models, such as an iPhone 3 or 3G, would be eligible for trade-ins, although given their limited resale value that seems unlikely.

Apple already has a similar mail-in rebate program. But the convenience of doing so in person, and walking out with a new phone instead of waiting for days or weeks, would be a big upgrade in terms of convenience.

If recent history is any guide, Apple's next iPhone will go on sale in mid- to late September and will likely to be called either the iPhone 6 or iPhone 5S. The company has not made an official announcement, but multiple observers expect Apple to announce the phone September 10 and begin selling it in stores about 10 days later.

The company has released a new iPhone model every year, and the release dates have all been in the summer or fall. The iPhone 5 came out in September 2012, the iPhone 4S in October 2011, and the three versions before that in the summer months.

The company is also rumored to be working on a cheaper version of the iPhone that would be sold in emerging markets. Other reports have speculated on features ranging from a larger, 4.7-inch display screen to a fingerprint scanner to an option to buy a gold iPhone.

 ODD NEWS

Masked hero hauls bags, babies up and down Tokyo subway stairs

(Reuters) - In a green outfit with silver trim and

matching mask, a superhero waits by the stairs of a Tokyo

subway station, lending his strength to the elderly,

passengers lugging heavy packages and mothers with baby strollers.

"Japanese people find it hard to accept help,

they feel obligated to the other person,

so the mask really helps me out," said Tadahiro Kanemasu.

The slender 27-year-old has spent three months being a good

Samaritan at the station on Tokyo's western side.

Like many in the city, it has neither elevators nor

escalators and a long flight of dimly lit stairs.

Inspiration came from the children he met at his job at an

organic greengrocer, which also prompted the color of his costume.

He picked up the green Power Rangers suit and two spares at

a discount store for 4,000 yen ($41) each.

Since Kanemasu can set aside only a couple of hours

each day for his good deeds, he hopes to recruit others

in different colored suits. Already he has inquiries about

pink and red.

Hayato Ito, who works alongside Kanemasu at the greengrocer,

said his kindness to others over the years meant his

alter ego did not come as a complete surprise.

"There were hints of this from a long time ago but finally

he flowered as a hero," Ito said.

Kanemasu admitted he got off to a bit of a rocky start.

"When I first began, people basically said

'Get away from me, you weirdo'," he said.

"Now they still think I'm weird but in a good way."

Vincent Bright Pleads Guilty To Stealing Dad's Body From Cemetery

DETROIT — A man accused of stealing his father's body from

a Detroit cemetery with the hope of bringing him back

to life has pleaded guilty in exchange for avoiding prison.

Vincent Bright pleaded guilty Monday to a charge of

disinterring a body. He faces sentencing Sept. 24

in Wayne County Circuit Court.

"He seems to be doing well," defense lawyer Gerald Karafa

told The Associated Press on Tuesday.

In exchange for the guilty plea, he said Bright will

get probation with credit for time served.

The judge ruled that Bright could be released on bail, Karafa said.

A presentencing review will help determine the details

of Bright's probation, he said.

A conviction on the disinterring a body charge could

have brought up to 10 years in prison.

Bright, then 48, stole the body of 93-year-old

Clarence Bright from Gethsemane Cemetery on Jan. 14 and stored

it in a home freezer. Police, acting on a tip from other

family members, found the corpse in Vincent Bright's home

on Detroit's east side.

Police said Vincent Bright is religious and took the body

in hopes his father would be resurrected.

Prosecutors sought a mental health examination for Bright,

and he was found competent to stand trial.

Leon Smith Cuddled With Fox He Thought Was His Girlfriend

This guy really got some tail last night.

London man Leon Smith, 30, was sleeping when he felt

someone nuzzling the back of his neck. He reached over

to snuggle with who he thought was his girlfriend,

only to discover a fox in his bed.

"I just couldn't believe it," Smith said.

"It was so calm, just staring at me."

After a stressful few minutes, the fox ran off.

Although his girlfriend Sophie (who was at work at the time)

found the whole thing fairly amusing, she said she wasn't

particularly interested in her snuggle rival making

another impromptu booty call.

... who among us, if given the chance would pass up

the chance to cuddle with a fox? You girlfriend will still be

there tomorrow, Leon. Get your priorities in order, dude.

  • Scott- I didn't realize that Mad Billy (Geoff) was sending these to a podcast/internet show, so thank you for the positive comments about our beer. You were sent 3 bottles of our Midnight Session, which was a pale ale with Mosaic hops, then we added a grain derived colorant to play with people's heads. We described this beer as an entry level dark beer, since it appears that only pale hoppy beers are selling to the commerial side of the business. Kind of a mind fuck beer. Take care, -Greg
