Comcast goes to Barcelona before Xcalibur

In the "it's about fucking time" department, Comcast has rolled out it's cable/DVR UI upgrade and
given it the title "Barcelona."  Anyroom DVR customers in Florida are getting it first with other US
markets said to receive the upgrade by the end of the year.  Barcelona is made for HD televisions
with 16x9 visuals displaying more show info and filters.  Even though today's cable box UI is a
decade or so old I can't help but expect more out of our cable software than Barcelona seems to
offer so far (how about an option to hide channels that I don't get for a change?).  Fortunately
Barcelona is just an appetizer before Comcast's app-laiden Xcalibur guide comes out next year.

Microwave plays YouTube videos while you wait

Ugh. There's no worse first-world problem than waiting for your food to come out of the microwave.

Thanks to a group of young developers, you can watch YouTube videos on your microwave while you're

waiting for those delicious little White Castle burgers. Mmmm.

The uWave is basically an HP TouchPad connected to a microwave, but its functionality is so much more than that.

When you start the microwave, a process is started that pulls a popular YouTube video to play on the HP TouchPad.

Once the timer goes off, you'll also be sent a text and a tweet. It's simply amazing. Can we please get these into production?

Pakistan Telecom Authority banning some cursing by text

Some of us like a good cuss every now and then. Others like to send dirty messages to our, err, loved ones. But in Pakistan,

that's soon to stop, as the country is banning rude text messages.

While older generations bang on about how detrimental the culture of email and SMS is, officials in Pakistan must have decided

that it was what gets said in text messages that's the problem.

They clearly got quite carried away by it all, too, because the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has created a list of

more than 1,000 words and phrases which will be banned from appearing in text messages according to The Guardian.

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority doesn't want Pakistanis to be able to text the following words to each other,
in fear that they will become rapists and murderers, or something. So it banned them. Here are those words.

Burglar left himself logged into Facebook

NORCROSS, Ga., Nov. 22 (UPI) --

Police in Georgia said they were searching for a burglary suspect

who allegedly left himself logged into Facebook on his victim's computer.

Gwinnett County police allege Trevor Jones, 34, left his car running in the driveway

of a home he burglarized near Norcross Nov. 15, and homeowner Stephanie White

returned while he was still inside and took his keys and wallet, which contained his identification,

from the vehicle, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Tuesday.

White drove to the end of the street and saw Jones flee with items from her home, police said.

Investigators allege Jones broke into a second home in the neighborhood later in the day

and left himself logged into Facebook on the victim's computer.

White's digital camera was discovered in the second victim's home, police said.

Jones, who was on parole for a previous burglary charge, was being sought on charges of burglary,

criminal trespassing and parole violation.

Carjackers foiled by stick shift

VALLEJO, Calif., Nov. 22 (UPI) --

Police in California said three would-be carjackers were foiled

because the vehicle they targeted had a manual transmission.

Vallejo police said the men, at least two of them armed with handguns,

approached a man in front of his home around 7:10 p.m. Saturday

while he was unloading groceries from his car, the Vallejo Times-Herald reported Monday.

Police said the attackers, each around 20 years old,

forced the man to the ground and took the keys to his car,

then fled after discovering they were unable to operate the stick shift.

Darth Vader claims land plot in Ukraine

(Reuters) -

Welcoming the local authorities' move to the dark side,

Darth Vader has asked for a land plot in the Ukrainian Black Sea port of Odessa to park his space ship.

An Odessite dressed as the Star Wars villain visited the mayor's office this week

to claim a free land plot citing Ukrainian legislation which grants every citizen

the right to own 1,000 square meters of land.

His visit followed a decision by city authorities to grant attractive land plots along the sea coast

to a group of people for free, prompting public concerns about corruption, according to local media.

The mayor's office has since said the move was a mistake but has not yet canceled it,

according to local news website Dumskaya.net.

"I am Darth Vader, the right hand of Emperor Palpatine,"

the man introduced himself to amused policemen, as seen in a video posted on YouTube (here)

and accompanied by the Imperial March music.

"...Knowing that many (local legislature) deputies and the mayor have switched to the dark side...

I have come for a land plot... for my space cruiser."

Officials accepted the man's application after he showed his passport and

removed the black helmet equipped with a voice-distorting device.

"The application has been registered and will be considered," a spokeswoman for the mayor's office told Reuters.

"We are not on the dark side, we are light-side people," she added.
