Undertakers offer coffins for gay market

BERLIN | Fri Nov 19, 2010 2:44pm EST

(Reuters) - Two undertakers in the northwestern German city of Cologne

are trying to tap into the gay market by selling coffins adorned with images of male nudes.

The prize piece in their display window is a coffin decorated with images of mostly naked,
muscular young men in athletic poses inspired by Italian Renaissance paintings.

"We believe you should be able to have a coffin that lets you embark on your last journey

in a way that reflects how you lived your life,"

undertaker Thomas Brandl told Reuters on Thursday.

The unconventional coffin, which costs 1,650 euros ($2,300),

has aroused fascination among customers, said Brandl:

"People are really interested because it's so unique. Reactions have been very positive so far."

Brandl, 32, and his 34-year-old business partner Michael Koenigsfeld,

said they had branched out into the gay market

in order to satisfy the increasing number of special requests they received.

"Even though the Lord Mayor of Berlin, the vice-chancellor and many others

openly admit to being homosexual nowadays, marginal groups still face prejudices

and bureaucratic hurdles," the pair said in a statement.

They said they provided an individual and different service which offered

"a warm and fantastical departure for same-sex couples."

The gay couple also sell coffins and urns in rainbow colors --

the international symbol of the gay and lesbian movement --

and offer burials around a tree reserved exclusively for homosexuals.

Given estimates which suggest that around one in ten of Cologne's population is homosexual,

Brandl and Koenigsfeld are well placed to serve the gay community.

The pair also cater for the heterosexual market in an unconventional way,

giving customers the opportunity to get involved in designing coffins for their loved ones.

"You can choose different colors and designs," Brandl said.

"You could go for Cologne's skyline or lots of women on your coffin.

A grandmother might like images of her grandchildren on hers -- there are loads of possibilities."

Robbers wound up with bag of actual dough

Published: Nov. 23, 2010 at 7:47 PM

NEW YORK, Nov. 23 (UPI) --

New York police said two muggers held up the owners of a pizzeria

and made off with a bag containing the wrong kind of dough -- actual pizza dough.

Authorities said Salvatore LaRosa, 25, who

surrendered to authorities Friday and was released Monday on $1 million bail,

allegedly followed the owners of Brother's Pizzeria home

and confronted them in their driveway.

He and an accomplice demanded a bag they believed to contain cash,

the New York Daily News reported Tuesday.

One of the victims resisted during the June 30, 2008,

incident and was shot in both legs, the recently released records said.

It was unclear whether LaRosa or the other suspect,

who has yet to be identified, was the shooter.

However, the thieves did not get the last laugh, investigators said.

"The bag that was stolen contained pizza dough,

" Drug Enforcement Administration agent Kristie Osswald said.

Thrown Slim Jims strike clerk's son

Published: Nov. 23, 2010 at 3:49 PM

FERN PARK, Fla., Nov. 23 (UPI) --

Police in Florida said a gas station clerk's 6-year-old son

was struck in the head with a box of Slim Jims

while his father was arguing with a customer.

Seminole County sheriff's deputies said a man paid for $10

worth of gasoline at the Chevron station in Fern Park Saturday afternoon

and the cashier said the man came back inside the store

and said he was having trouble pumping the gasoline,

the Orlando (Fla.) Sentinel reported Tuesday.

The gas station attendant told authorities he helped the man

but the customer returned to the store a second time

and complained he had not received the amount of gas he paid for.

The clerk said an argument ensued

and he began to call authorities,

leading the customer to throw a box of Slim Jims,

 which struck Saadati's 6-year-old son.

Police said the boy was not injured and they are searching for the suspect.
